McCarthy's Corner - Vol. 6 Akerman makes 51 saves and CeeBees edge Clarenville at home 3-2
The HGOE CeeBee Stars edged the Clarenville Caribous 3-2 this past Saturday night and in doing so reached the .500 mark for the first time this season. Their second straight win over the Caribous evened their record at 4 wins and 4 losses on the season. Jordan Escott opened the scoring by firing a shot past Clarenville goalie Brent Hatfield at the 12:37 mark of the first period. Veteran Chad Earle knotted the score at 1 with a little over 5 minutes left in the opening stanza. However Ryon Williams' short handed tally restored the one goal lead for the Stars before the end of the period. The only goal of the second period saw Nic Fitzgerald dent the twine for the Caribous. The CeeBees took the lead for good early in the third period when Ryan Dawson scored after he was on the receiving end of a nifty backhand pass from Bradley Budden who was playing his first game of the season for the Stars. The Caribous pulled their goalie for the final two minutes of the contest in an attempt to send the game to overtime. It was a frantic two minutes with Clarenville having several good scoring opportunities with the extra attacker on the ice but the CeeBees survived the onslaught with goalie Riley Akerman making some huge saves to preserve the win, among the 51 saves he made in the game.
This coming Friday night Dec. 3rd the CeeBee Stars travel to the Jack Byrne Arena to face the St. John's Caps and will be on home ice again at the DCHGCC this Sat. Dec. 4th when they host the CBS Blues.
