The Avalon East Senior Hockey League started it's 50th season with a nail biter on Friday night at the Jack Byrne Arena.
Bell Island Blues defeated the hometown Northeast Eagles 5-4 in a game decided by a shootout.
Brandon Burry scored the game winning goal in the shootout for the Blues. Brandon O'Neil, Mike Ryan, Garrett Murphy and Ryan Power scored for Bell Island in regulation time.
Bryan Clarke, Tyler Walshe, Andrew White and Dan Cadigan scored for Northeast.
The AESHL season continues tonight at the Danny Cleary Community Centre in Harbour Grace when the HGOE Ceebee Stars host the defending champion St. John's Green Sleeves Caps. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30pm.
